What is agent-share

agent-share shares a folder with peers. A peer mounts that folder on its own machine and reads it like a local directory. The mount is read-only.

The producer serves file bytes on demand over an irohΒ  QUIC connection. The consumer mounts them through a loopback NFSv3 bridge. The bridge uses the built-in NFS client of the operating system, so there is no FUSE and no kernel extension.

No server, no daemon

The two peers connect directly. There is nothing to host and no account to create. agent-share serve runs until you stop it. The mount stays until you press Ctrl-C.

Lazy and live

Serve scans the folder for metadata only. Nothing is hashed or sent before a peer reads it. When a peer reads a file, it fetches only the byte ranges that it reads.

The producer watches the folder. Edits, new files and deletions reach connected peers without a remount.

Both ends must run agent-share. It uses its own QUIC ALPN, so it does not mount against other tools.

Three ways to consume a share

  • The native binary mounts the share as a filesystem on macOS and Linux.
  • The webapp opens the share in a browser tab, with no install.
  • npx agent-share writes the files into a local folder, with no native binary.
